Theme 02

How Carbon Data Gets Built

Behind every reported number is plain operational work: meter data, ERP exports, supplier audits, Scope 1, 2 and 3 boundaries, baselines and benchmarks. This theme follows that work and the frameworks shaping it, from the GHG Protocol and ISO 14040/44 to CSRD and national emissions targets.

Common questions

What are Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions?
Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned sources, Scope 2 covers purchased electricity, heat and steam, and Scope 3 covers everything else in the value chain, from suppliers to product end of life. Definitions come from the GHG Protocol.
Which standards define life cycle assessment?
ISO 14040 sets out LCA principles and framework, and ISO 14044 sets requirements and guidelines. Product category rules (PCRs) then specify how an LCA is done for a given product type.
How far are the world's targets from 1.5°C?
UNEP's Emissions Gap reporting finds that even full delivery of current national pledges leaves the world well above 1.5°C. Limiting warming to 1.5°C needs roughly 42% cuts by 2030 against 2019 levels.
